i2b2 allows users to select patients of interest based on information coming from several sources and to analyze the obtained data.

Based on NIH-project
The entire service will be based on an open-source software program developed at the U.S. research center "i2b2" (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside) and funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH). The software developed from the center, also named i2b2, is an open-source solution that allows to implement data-warehouse systems oriented to the integration of clinical and research data and their joint analysis.
So far i2b2 is installed in many clinical research centers to manage data from more than 250 millions of patients. -
Biomeris provides support services for implementation of i2b2 in Europe
BIOMERIS' team has proven experience in i2b2 installation in several clinical fields in many clinical institutes in Europe (i2b2 projects).
BIOMERIS is the only European company providing professional support services for implementation of the i2b2 environment in EU health institution (https://www.i2b2.org/work/industry.html). -
Integration of clinical and research areas
The product allows to facilitate the exchange of information between clinical and research areas.
The cycle of information is in fact often divided:- the results of clinical trials impact on clinical practice;
- bioinformatics analysis is performed on the experimental data to reach new knowledge.
The system allows:
- to facilitate the testing of research results through clinical trials;
- to use the data generated by clinical practice even for research purposes.

Integration of different data sourcesBiomeris provides solutions to aggregate data coming from different sources.
Specifically Biomeris has solid expertise in prototyping and implementation of advanced ETL procedures (Extract, Trasform and Load), essential operations in the process of integration within a data warehouse. These procedures allow to optimize data integration phase by automating the process of populating the data warehouse and permit for a steady and secure update of the whole system. -
Simple and fast querying the available dataThe system allows users to query the data-warehouse thanks to a simple and intuitive user interface.
The querying step is in fact facilitated by the use of an ontology of concepts which map information relating to available patients. A specific ontology will be defined for each project that the system will help to manage. A specific ontology permits users to select patients of interest by composing also complex rules using such concepts. -
Fast and accurate data analysis by embedded toolsThe system allows users to perform operations of monitoring, reporting and analysis of data relating to selected patients using analysis tools ("plugin") embedded into the system.
Among the available plugins for general purpose:
Summary-Stats: to visualize the distribution of a variable in the selected patient set Correlation/Association: to test the hypothesis of a correlation/association between two variables in the selected patient set KM-Stats: to estimate the survival function (Kaplan Meier estimator) associated to an event in the selected patient set Export: to export in .xls format all the variables of interest for the selected patient set Moreover, the system can be configured according to user needs by adding custom analysis tools. In particular, the integration of R and Weka libraries allows to develop specific tools for statistical analysis and data mining.
